Enhanced Understanding Leads to Advanced Treatment

Many exotic pets may harbor conditions without outward symptoms. Diagnostic testing and imaging technology enable us to delve deeper beneath the surface. Our state-of-the-art lab allows us to assess your pet comprehensively, providing a holistic view of their well-being. At South Texas Avian & Exotic Hospital in San Antonio, our exotic-specific diagnostic and imaging capabilities cater to the unique needs of your pets.

Comprehensive Laboratory Services
Our in-house lab offers a fast route to look into your pet’s health on the spot, which allows our team to create the most effective treatment plan. Additionally, we collaborate with various laboratories nationwide when further testing or more specialized tests are needed.
Our range of tests includes:- CBC (complete blood count)
- Blood chemistry panels (organ function assessment)
- Protein electrophoresis (EPH)
- Disease screening tailored to each species, including PCR for Psittacosis, Avian Bornavirus, and Psittacine Beak and Feather Disease testing for birds
- Fecal exams (parasite detection)
Routine bloodwork often accompanies your pet’s annual wellness exam. Understanding your pet’s baseline bloodwork when healthy enhances our ability to detect and address any deviations in health accurately.

Imaging Technology
Visualizing your pet’s internal organs and skeletal system is invaluable. Digital X-ray, CT scans, and ultrasound enable us to create detailed images of organs, the skeletal structure, abdominal cavity, and more. These imaging tools, whether used individually or in conjunction, provide invaluable information necessary for precise diagnosis and effective treatment planning.
Digital X-Ray
Digital X-ray surpasses its film predecessor in several aspects. Emitting less radiation, and producing faster and more detailed images, it aids in diagnosing dental problems, kidney and bladder stones, foreign body location, fractures or trauma injuries, and more.
Ultrasound
Utilizing sound waves, ultrasound offers real-time imaging of organs, tissues, and cavities. Ultrasounds are particularly useful in assessing organ structure, identifying abnormalities like tumors or cysts, and aiding in reproductive evaluations for mammals and reptiles alike.
CT Scan
Combining X-ray images taken at various angles into a 3D image, CT scans provide detailed insights into tumor locations, organ diseases, and traumatic injuries. We also rely on CT scans in rabbit dentistry and avian heart disease (atherosclerosis), among other applications.
Endoscopy
Using specialized video cameras, veterinary endoscopy allows us to look inside an animal’s body in a minimally invasive technique. With this technique, we can view inside a pet without the need for large incisions, by viewing full color images provided by the cameras. We use both rigid endoscopy and flexible endoscopy at South Texas Avian & Exotic Hospital.

Reptile and Avian Sexing
Curious about your pet's gender? Reptiles and birds pose challenges in sex determination without diagnostic assistance. Through testing, we can confirm your pet’s gender, facilitating a better understanding of their health needs, breeding potential, and suitability of their name. Does Polly or Pauly want a cracker? We'll let you know!
